Artisanship in the service of local aristocracy
The plaques found on the site of Loisy served to decorate wooden items, such as chests.
Reflecting the great technical mastery of their creators, they combine incised and open-worked patterns in cow bone, to produce refined furnishings. A metal sheet was often inserted between the support and the veneer in order to create light reflections. Similar productions have been observed in Great Britain and Scandinavia, which may have influenced the work done in Loisy. This influence is plausible given the geographical location of the mound, at a crossroads between land, river and sea routes.
