The collectors

Gustave Hannezo (1857-1922) embarked on a career in the military. While garrisoned in Tunisia, he developed an active interest in archaeology, from 1886 to 1909, through excavations in the catacombs of Sousse. In Mâcon, he became acquainted with Léonce Lex, conservator at the museum, and Alfred Lacroix, grandson of the collector Tony Lacroix. From 1889 to 1910, he made donations to the museum, including lamps and objects found in Tunisia, in Phoenician and Roman graves. He authored numerous studies on Tunisian towns, as well as on local archaeology.
