The remains of a craft workshop
Evidence of the production of objects using animal materials, such as bones, horns and deer antlers, was found at Place des Carmélites in 2000. Archaeologists found scraps and rough shapes used in preparation for the making of combs, stamps and other decorative items.
What is zooarchaeology?
During excavations, many fragments of animal remains are discovered, such as the tines (branches) of deer antlers. By comparing with reference collections, zooarchaeologists study bones to determine the part of the anatomy they belong to; the animal’s gender, age and species are identified by taking measurements. Their analyses attempt to throw light on the role of the animal for humans.
